Transfer Guidelines and Procedures

If you choose to have a firearm that you have purchased or are being gifted transferred to you, please follow these instructions:

1) Seller or Transferring Party must be a current Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder.

  • We do not accept transfers from Private Parties via any sort of mail or parcel delivery service due to identification issues and other ATF regulations.
  • We do handle Private Party transfers if both parties involved in the transfer come to our facility and have proper identification (See Instructions Below).

2) The Seller or Transferring Party will need a copy of our FFL License prior to sending your firearm.  Many of the popular online retailers already have a copy of our FFL and many have us listed as "Preferred Dealers".  If a copy of our FFL needs to be forwarded please call us at (816) 273-0036 or email your information to admin@jandboutdoors.com.

3) The FFL Licensee must forward a copy of their current Federal Firearms License to us (unless already on file).  This can be done either by sending electronically (email: admin@jandboutdoors.com or by fax: (816) 273-0072).  FFL copies can be included with shipment.

If Seller's or Transferring Party's FFL is not received, prior to, or at the time of the firearm arrival, we cannot complete the transfer. If problems occur in getting a copy of a license from the shipper, the customer is responsible for contacting and making arrangements with the transferring FFL to produce a copy of their Federal Firearms License.

4) Once the firearm arrives, we are required to temporarily remove the firearm from packaging to ensure proper firearm information (Serial #, Manufacturer, Importer, Caliber/Gauge, etc.).  This information (per Federal Regulations must be obtained from the firearm itself and not from packaging or paperwork.  This information is then entered it into our ATF Acquisition and Disposition Book.

5) Once we have entered it into our books, WE WILL CONTACT YOU WHEN THE FIREARM IS READY TO BE PICKED UP.  Even if the shipping carrier (FedEx/UPS/USPS, etc.) indicates your package has been delivered, do not assume the firearm is ready for pickup.  Depending on business volume and when the package was delivered, it may take several hours for your firearm to get logged in.

Transfers Between Private Parties At Our Facility

Facilitating the transfer of ownership/registration of a firearm in a private party transaction is purely voluntary under federal law although there are many reasons to use our Private Party Transfer Services at J & B Outdoors!

First and foremost you as a seller probably do not have the ability to conduct complete background checks on potential buyers. This leaves you as a private seller with no way to confirm whether or not the person you are selling or transferring the firearm to is prohibited from possessing it.

In fact, you may not even be aware of all the circumstances that prohibit someone from possessing a firearm due to municipal, state, or federal regulations.  This can put you in a situation where you may be violating the law yourself.

When individuals decide to use J & B Outdoors to facilitate the private sale/transfer of their firearms, it can enhance public safety, assist law enforcement, and help ensure firearms end up only in the hands of those who are legally allowed to possess them.

As the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) states;

"When a private transaction is completed through a licensed dealer, both the customers and the community have some assurance that the individual wishing to purchase the firearm is not prohibited by law from possessing or receiving a firearm.  When a private seller goes through an FFL to transfer his or her firearm, it can also improve the ability of law enforcement to trace that firearm if it is later recovered during a criminal investigation."

Private Party Transfers - Here's How It Works:

If you are wanting to transfer a firearm to another individual, the firearm must be brought in to our store (please ensure the firearm is unloaded and in a safe condition).  We will need a government issued photo identification with valid address such as a driver's license, passport, etc..  We will log the firearm into our ATF Firearms Book.

The firearm can then be transferred to another individual.  The person MUST BE at least 18 years old to receive long gun(s) and 21 years of age for handgun(s).

We can facilitate transfers of handguns to Missouri residents only.  If the transferee is from out of state we cannot transfer any handgun or any firearms classified as a pistol or handgun due to Federal Regulations.

Transferee will present their valid government issued photo identification which shows current address; Driver’s License, Military Transit Papers, Passport, etc.. Presented ID must be legible and unaltered, must not be expired and must contain current address.

Transferee will be asked to review, complete, sign, and date and ATF Form 4473.

J & B Outdoors will review the submitted ATF Form 4473 and if it meets federal, state, and local requirements, we will conduct an FBI NICS Federal Background Check.  Once processed they will issue a status.  The following responses are possible:

  • PROCEED – If PROCEED option is issued; once transfer fee(s) are paid in full, you will receive your firearm(s).
  • DELAYED – If DELAYED option is issued, we must wait for 3 business days for the NICS Section to process the background check.  If we do not receive a final response from NICS within 3 business days, the Transferee may pick up their firearm(s) after that time, unless there are exigent circumstances. If we receive a final response from NICS within that time period, we will call the Transferee and advise them of the final status.
  • DENIED – If DENIED option is issued; Transferee will not receive firearm(s); however, transfer fee(s) are still assessed as the process is the same and we have committed our time and resources.

We reserve the right to terminate any transaction. We also closely observe all municipal, city, state and federal laws and regulatory restrictions.

These requirements are put in place to protect everyone involved in the transfer process.  If you have any questions, please call or contact us prior to having a firearm shipped.

The fee for this service is the same as other tranfers - $35.00
